Introduction

While you're watching the weekend service, there are teams of students in the background making it happen! One of the teams is our Weekend Production Ministry. These are the students running the cameras, putting up the lyrics to the songs, switching between slides, ect. This ministry is extremely important because not only are we responsible for what shows up on the big screen, we record every service and send them out to our regional campuses to be used for their weekend services. We also cut out clips from the message and post them on our blog! You don't need any experience; just a heart for serving and a willingness to learn. We have training available and you can start with camera 1 and work your way up to director!

Need help with the costs?

Sometimes trips like this one can be a bit pricey. We try as hard as we can to keep costs low, but $279 is a lot of money for a lot of people. However, that shouldn't stop you! God is way bigger than money issues! A great way to gather funds for trips is to send out a support letter. A support letter lets your friends and family know that you want to go on this trip, but need some financial help. We included a sample support letter right here. Feel free to use it!

Stories

Stories

The story of what God has done and been doing in your life is a powerful testimony of who He is. We share our stories to encourage others, glorify God, share our faith, and remind us of His role in our lives. Before you begin writing your story, we want to give you a few pointers:

1. Short and simple

In a perfect world, people would love to sit and read/listen to your story. Unfortunately, the reality is that the human attention span isn't the greatest. So, keep everyone engaged by keeping your story 3-5 minutes.

2. Cut it out!

A lot of us have a habit of including too much detail. The color of the car you were driving when you accepted Jesus into your life is not very important. Cutting out the unnecessary details will shave your story way down.

3. It's not about you!

Don't get us wrong, you're a huge part of your story, but it's really about God. Keep the focus on what God has done in your life. It's not a biography :)

4. Avoid shock value

Your story doesn't need to have some crazy miracle or hardship to be interesting. Some of the best testimonies involve God quietly working in someone's heart. If your story does involve something incredible, be sure you describe it in a way that points to God's awesomeness and doesn't "spice up" your story.

5. 30/70 Rule

When you write your story for the first time, you'll notice that you probably spent the majority of it talking about your experiences before you accepted Jesus. The last couple of paragraphs are usually a quick run-through of how He has changed your life. Your story should be 30% pre-God and 70% post-God. Otherwise it turns into a "hey, look at everything I went though and survived" kind of thing. Remember, it's not about you :)

What's your story?

We're simply revealing the truth that as Christains, we're brainwashed to live according world not even realize it! Two clips are up for now, but the entire series will be up very soon!

Would you ever travel through the Amazon Rainforest without a guide? Of course not! You need someone who has been there. Who know what to look out for and where to go. Why not do the same thing with your walk with God? Sometimes life gets hard and confusing, or it kind of feels like your stuck and don't know where to go next. We want to help you with that! We want to guide you on the right path towards God.

We are always free to talk. Maybe you have questions about the Bible, or you want to know more about God. Maybe you need to get something big off your chest like an addiction that you've never told anyone about. Whatever it is, even if it's boyfriend/girlfriend problems at school, we're here to listen. It can be a simple as a quick get together after a service on the weekend. It can be a great conversation over coffee at Starbucks (our treat). It can be whatever works best for you. In fact, it can even be a simple private message conversation on Facebook.

Introduction

The goal of our greeting ministry is to make sure that everyone who comes to service feels welcome. If you like to meet new people and are ready to find a place to serve, this is the ministry for you! Shake It student volunteers make HSM a warm and inviting place for each student who comes through our doors. The Shake It ministry acts as the information hub for HSM. If a student has a question, the Shake It team knows the answer. If a student looks like they're alone or new, a member of the Shake It team is the first to start a conversation with them. They hand out all the bulletins and pens, and clean up after every service. This is one of the most fun ministries to serve in. All you need to join this ministry is a friendly smile and a heart for loving others like Christ loves us. We meet every weekend an hour before service!

You'll work closely with the band to get their levels perfect and program lighting patters that fit with music. This is a very important and hands on ministry with a huge pay off! Never done anything like this before? Not a problem! We'll teach you everything you'll need to know from hooking up a mic on Josh Griffin to working the lighting console. Introduction

Being able to capture a moment in which God has touched a life, or where He is moving in the next generation, or Jesus has been honored through a triumph is something that will bless the people involved as well as others who come across it. We as student photographers want to be there for our student community to help capture these moments and to serve through our love of photography. Our aim is to capture these glimpses of God so that stories, triumphs, and transformation can be showcased for the honor and glory of God. Like every craft, we want to give God our best and to hone our skills, so training sessions will be held to help educate and motivate student photographers to go out and capture these glimpses of God. Our goal is to archive what Jesus has been doing in our ministry and church so that we can be reminded of Him who is faithful. Building community with our fellow photographers and those we photograph is a huge priority, because to invest in a relationship with someone helps us tell their stories more effectively.

We're looking for creative students with a great grasp of the Bible. We like to keep this ministry small, so if you sign up, you'll need to fill out a short questionnaire and be approved. What
Dance Ministry
Where
Refinery Half-Court
When
Every other Sunday from 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Who
Ervin Dinh

Introduction

The art of movement testifies to how amazing our God is and how beautifully we've been created. Moved is two fold: we are moved because of what Jesus has done for us and how our lives have been completely changed through His grace alone; second, we are moved into action, using all we are to bring praise and worship to our creator and moving others to experience Christ and moving them to join us in this journey.

Our aim is to incorporate all facets of dance; modern, hip hop, jazz, ballet, contemporary, to build community as well as showcase and move others through our movements of praise. We hope to help expand this idea of praise to God. We also want to use spoken word and drama to portray God's word and Jesus' love through various skits and stories.

We want to hold regular workshops as well as training sessions where various choreographers, dancers, directors will come and share their hearts with us in different pieces so that we can learn about dance and drama, hone our talents and skills, build community, and in turn use them to move others to see Christ.

We meet every other Sunday in the Refinery half-court gym from 1:00 - 3:00pm. It is an open place to teach all kinds of dance and brainstorm on how we can serve and teach others about God through dance. Everyone is welcome!

SHAPE

Introduction

Everyone is unique! God has shaped you in a very specific way to serve. To help figure out where you can best serve, we use SHAPE as a guideline. You have Spiritual gifts, a Heart, Abilities, a Personality, and Experiences that have shaped you for ministry. Where are you shaped to serve?

Spiritual Gifts

When you become a believer, God equips you with spiritual gifts to help you better serve Him. Spiritual gifts wouldn't normally come naturally to you (hence, spiritual gift). Some examples may be:

  • Wisdom
  • Teaching
  • Prayer
  • Evangelism
  • Giving
  • Leadership
  • Administration
  • Hospitality
  • Service
Whatever your gift may be, God has specifically designed you to use it. So keep that in mind when you choose a ministry!

Heart

What/who do you have a heart for? Some people have a heart for kids, so they serve with our Orphan Care Ministry. Others have a heart for new students, so they serve on the Shake It team. Pray about it and see who you have a heart for. Each of our ministries serves someone.

Ability

Everyone is good at something. Even if that something doesn't feel like much of anything. God can use our abilities is awesome ways. Easy examples would be the ability to play an instrument = join the band! The ability to make graphics = make graphics for the service! The ability to make people laugh and feel comfortable = join the greeting team! If you have an ability that doesn't fit a ministry that we currently have, let us know and we'll get a ministry started for you!

Personality

What kind of personality do you have? Are you outgoing or introverted? Are you a quick thinker or do you ponder things for awhile? Are you creative? Are you a talker? Are you a listener? Are you competitive? Everyone is different and that's what makes serving so awesome. If you're more introverted, you can help us serve on the Production Team! If you're creative, join the Oh Snaps camera ministry!

Experience

Your experience is a huge part of ministry! God can use both good and bad experiences to help you find a place to serve. For example, maybe on your first visit to church, someone really nice greeted you and started a great conversation. Now, to give someone else that experience, you join the greeting team. Or, maybe no one greeted you can you had a horrible experience your first time at church. You don't want anyone else to experience that, so you join the greeting team! What kind of experiences have you had that can drive you to serve?

Life Groups

Introduction

What are Life Groups?

Life Groups are small groups for high school students. These groups are made up of 10-12 students (same grade and gender) that meet weekly with a caring adult leader.
Life Groups are a perfect place for you to form great friendships with other students your age, build relationships with adult leaders and learn more about God and grow closer to Him. Your group will be encouraged to establish accountability with each other, have consistent personal quite times, get involved in ministry, and participate in service projects.

When and where do they meet?

Life Groups meet in host homes on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00pm. Meeting in homes creates a warm, friendly atmosphere for sharing life together.

What does a typical night look like?

Each Life Group will look different, but a typical night will look something like this: welcome / snacks / hang out / Bible study / discussion / prayer.
Being involved in a Life Group will be an awesome time to grow closer to God; what better way to do that than by reading and studying the Bible? Every Life Group will choose their study topic from the provided LIVE Curriculum. Studies include: prayer, following Jesus, making good decisions, purity, having healthy relationships, studying the Bible, dealing with temptation, living in godly community and more.

What about my leader?

HSM has incredible, screened and trained adult volunteers who are ready to serve and teach high school students. Our HSM leaders are there to encourage, teach, guide, and help you strengthen your walk with Christ. It may turn out to be the most significant relationship of your high school years.

What is the commitment level?

Being part of a Life Group is a privilege. We expect each Life Group member to commit to the following:

  1. Come to group prepared, equipped with a Bible, a pen, a notebook and a good attitude.
  2. Respect your Life Group leader. They are giving you their time because they WANT to minister to you.
  3. Respect and be kind to others in your group.
  4. Respect your Host Home. Help clean-up your host home at the end of every night.

How can I sign up ?

Yikes! You missed the dealine :( But don't worry! You can still register and be put on our waiting list. We'll plug you into a group as soon as a spot opens in an exsisting Life Group. Click here to sign up!

Here's a great example of what Life Groups are NOT like. Parker on staff with HSM and is an awesome Life Group leader. He likes to use his Life Group guys in his funny videos like this one.

What We Believe

Introduction

About God

God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.

  • Genesis 1:1
  • Genesis 1:26-27
  • Genesis 3:22
  • Psalm 90:2
  • Matthew 28:19
  • 1 Peter 1:2
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14

About Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven's glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

  • Matthew 1:22-23
  • Isaiah 9:6
  • John 1:1-5
  • John 14:10-30
  • Hebrews 4:14-15
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
  • Romans 1:3-4
  • Acts 1:9-11
  • 1 Timothy 6:14-15
  • Titus 2:13

About The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under his control daily.

  • 2 Corinthians 3:17
  • John 16:7-13
  • John 14:16-17
  • Acts 1:8
  • 1 Corinthians 2:12
  • 1 Corinthians 3:16
  • Ephesians 1:13
  • Galatians 5:25
  • Ephesians 5:1

About Salvation

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works – only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin's penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

  • Romans 6:23
  • Ephesians 2:8-9
  • John 14:6
  • John 1:12
  • Titus 3:5
  • Galatians 3:26
  • Romans 5:1

About the Bible

The Bible is God's word to all men. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16
  • 2 Peter 1:20-21

About Us

About Us

Hello!

HSM is our High School Ministry here at Saddleback Church. We've considered calling it "Danger Bear Falcon Explosion Ministry," but we decided to keep it simple and classy with just "HSM". You're probably asking, "So what are you all about and where did you get the awesome haircut?" To answer your second question first: thank you; only $10 at a Fantastic Sams down the street. And firstly, we're all about helping students get to know and grow closer to God through weekend messages, life groups, large group volunteer & individual ministry opportunities, prayer, mentorship, etc. We reach out to all the high school students in the Southern Orange County area. Everyone from the cheerleader whose parents just bought her a BMW for her 16th birthday to the super nerdy gamer who spends the majority of his time pwning n00bs on COD. We love them all :)

The Five Purposes of HSM

We make a lot of jokes and have a lot of fun, but our youth ministry really exists to REACH non-believing students, to CONNECT them with other Christians, to help them GROW in their faith, to challenge them to SERVE in a ministry that fits their shape and HONOR God with their lives.

-Connect

Friends are so important, but we're called to something more than that. Imagine having friendships on a much deeper level than what you're probably used to…Friends who know the real you and still invite you to things. Friends who care about your walk with God. Friends who encourage you, rather than judge you. These are Jesus-centered friendships and at HSM, we make tons of opportunities with ministries, life groups, and events to build these deep, meaningful friendships.

-Reach

HSM is big…really big. But the truth of the matter is that there are still a whole lot of high school students in our community who don't go to church anywhere. What's our strategy for reaching high school students with the good news of Jesus? YOU! That's right! We want to partner with you by providing some cool church experiences (like our weekend service), but ultimately it is up to you to invite a friend to come along.

-Grow

A relationship with Jesus Christ should never be boring, stagnant or stale. Instead, it should be vibrant, exciting and growing! HSM wants to help you grow in your faith and in your understanding and commitment to Jesus. We've got all sorts of things going on that can help you grow…including a bunch of tools and resources that can help you develop some of the habits of spiritual growth. Interested in growing closer to Christ? We're here to help!

-Serve

Take a look around. You don't have to look very hard to notice that we live in a world that is broken and in need of people who can to make a difference. HSM has TONS of opportunities for you to get involved. There's too many to list here, so head over to our ministries page and see what we have to offer. And…if you want to serve but can't find a ministry that looks interesting, invent one of your own, and we'll help you get it launched!

-Honor

One of our goals is to help you live a life that honors God. Honoring God through our choices, our attitudes, our lifestyle and the way we live day-to-day is the ultimate act of worship. Our weekend service, our small groups…in fact almost everything our ministry does is designed to help you live a life that brings honor to God.

Best Intern Ever

I (Parker) sent an email out to everyone on the HSM team, asking them to reply with a blurb about what they do on said team. Hope vaguely responded with, "baptisms, volunteers, students". In an attempt to spice up her profile, I will now make up nearly 90% of the following:

Hope is our two year intern on the HSM team. She's responsible for defending the office against velociraptor attacks. She has done a great job. Since she has been on the team, we have had 0 velociraptor related incidents. She also shovels jelly beans into a furnace that melts the small candies into a magical liquid used to attract unicorns. So far no unicorns have been caught. Her most important role on the team is "Paint Drying Watcher". It's not what it sounds like at all. She has to sit in a room and watch paint dry.

Hannah Rich

Hannah Rich

I help lead and train our students in serving the local community and church. I help with preparation and execution of serving projects in and outside the HSM service. Secondly, I meet weekly with female students and encourage them in a Christ-like lifestyle. I also have a passion for creative arts, and occasionally help on the artistic side of the weekend service.

I have a sick love for all things Harry Potter. If I didn't work for HSM, you would find me on a boat on the Arctic seas saving endangered whales from illegal whale hunters. I love Ukraine and work with street kids there every year. I am almost fluent in Russian and have begun learning Comanche, my Native tribe's ancient language. My favorite band is Gogol Bordello, and I enjoy any and all folk music. Some of my hidden talents include; playing the banjo, speed reading, painting, and a fabulous Chewbacca impression. Did I mention that I LOVE Harry Potter?

Travis Prouty

Being raised by wolves in the Siberian wilderness and being kept on a strict diet of lichen and regurgitated elk meat really has a lasting and profound effect on one's outlook on life. That kind of rugged upbringing leaves a person with a set of skills that are both unique and useless in daily life. Travis has taken these life experiences abroad and an advertising degree from Cal State University Fullerton and translated them into his role on the HSM team as the senior copy editor/ creative account manager and strategic liaison to the wildlife community.

He loves students and loves seeing them grow in their relationships with Christ. Travis has lived all over the world, including China and Kenya, and God has given him a passionate heart for spreading the gospel across the world, especially through the underground church. If he didn't work for HSM, you would find him on a boat in the Arctic seas watching Hannah cruise around on a boat wondering where all the whales and illegal whale hunters were. Meanwhile, in the Antarctic, whale populations would continue to dwindle.

I am in love with Jesus Christ and I hope to see the next generation grow up loving Christ in a way that will change their lives, this culture and this world. I believe that God still moves in huge ways and expect nothing less from a great God. I help run/organize/help with creativity in the weekend services, I like to teach anything Jesus, and I love to make a fool of myself on stage, in videos, or in person. It's almost natural how much of a fool I am.

I am a hard-core kid at heart (yes, that screaming music). I love playing the drums and pwning n00bs on CODMW3, I buy tons of books on Amazon (nerd for sure) and I have hipster tendencies.

Baptism

Baptism

What is baptism?

Baptism is the act of a BELIEVING Christian who wants to publicly confess their personal commitment to Jesus Christ. It is the symbolic WASHING AWAY of one's old, sinful past and the RISING again to LIFE, God's way. The act of baptism can be defined as an outward expression of an inward decision.

What does baptism mean?

Baptism illustrates Jesus' BURIAL and RESURRECTION.
"Christ died for our sins ... He was buried ... and He rose again." 1 Cor. 15: 3-4
Baptism illustrates NEW LIFE as a Christian.
"By our baptism then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead... so also we may live a NEW LIFE." Rom. 6: 4
Baptism does not make you a Christian. It is a demonstration that you already believe. It is important to understand that baptism does not "save" you. You are "saved" only by your faith in Jesus.

Why do we get baptized?

To follow the example set by CHRIST & because Christ COMMANDED it.
". . . Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river." Mark 1: 9
"Jesus said, Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit..." Matt. 28:19-20

When is a good time to get baptized?

As soon as you BELIEVE! THERE IS NO REASON TO DELAY! As soon as you have decided to trust Christ with your life, you can and should be baptized. If you're waiting until you're perfect, you'll never be ready.
"Those who believe ... were baptized ... that day!" Acts 8: 35-38

Prayer

Prayer

Prayer is a cool way that we can communicate with God (and it's not just about asking for things!). When you pray, you're having a conversation with the One who created you (except He doesn't nag and make take out the trash)! Here, you can learn more about prayer, pray for someone, and even submit your own prayers.

Praise

Praise God for who He is and His attributes. Give God your worship and adoration.
Example:
"God, you're awesome. You are the King of everything. You are the King of my life."

Repent

Confess to God the things this week you have done in thought, word or deed which were not right.

Example:

"Lord, I'm sorry for being such a tool. I hit on a girl who had a boyfriend."

Ask

It is right to ask God for things - to ask Him to help and heal you and other people. Make your requests known to Him as child asks their parent.

Example:

"Father, please help me grow closer to you. Please give me the strength to do Your will. Also, please heal Tommy. He broke his arm trying to do a kick flip off the Refinery."

Yield

Give your plans, your hopes, your future to God. Let Him know that His will is more important that your... and actually follow through with that!

Example:

"God, I love you and I want to do Your will, even when it's difficult. When a cute girl starts flirting with me, I will do what You want me to do, not what I would do... which is be a tool."

About Us

Introduction

Hey, I'm John Doe. I'm a template person who acts as a web designer & developper.

Yeah, you heard me right, a template person. You should see that coming. I mean, come on, which couple would name their offspring John Doe? It only makes sense when it means John Doe the template, right?

Man, it's tough to be a template person. Why? Well, because there isn't a Jone Doe there, is there? Many template sites introduce me as the owner of the site, but who wants to be an owner if you can't have a Ms. Jone Doe to flirt with?

As you can see, I'm not speaking in Lorem-ipsum. Though it's my mother language, I find it impolite to speak to people in a language that they consider as gibberish. Impolite as in how they respond impolitely: "WTH are you talking about?"

One last thing, if you ever find Ms. Jone Doe the template. Could you please tell her that I lorem ipsum dolor sit amet her?
